Stage set for third round of 22ft Rabdan Dhow sailing race

The stage is set for the third round of 22ft Rabdan Dhow sailing race. Organised by Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club as the part of Maritime Heritage Festival, the race to be held off the heights of Lulu Island at 3pm on Friday. More than 50 dhows had confirmed their entry for this round.
The organising committee of the race has completed the required arrangements to bring out the event in the best way over a distance of 7 nautical miles. The club attaches great importance to heritage races of various categories and plays a prominent role in preserving the ancient UAE marine heritage.
The 22ft dhow sailing race is quite popular among the teenagers and young men. During these races the young sailors always show great enthusiasm and a desire to win showcasing their distinguished racing skills.
The race will start from the heights of Lulu Island towards Abu Dhabi Corniche, and the winners’ crowning ceremony will be held on the podium of the Maritime Heritage Festival.
The first round was held as part of the Sheikh Zayed Festival races, where the loader “Hasheem” won the title. The second round, held as the part of Adnoc races, was won by the loader “Nimran”.
Khalifa Al Rumaithi, Head of the Heritage Races Department at the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, lauded the great turnout of young participants to heritage races, especially in the 22ft category, and its success to become one of the events that attracts audience on Abu Dhabi Corniche.
“The 22ft dhow sailing race brings together junior and young sailors, and thus enhances and expands the base of the participants,” Al Rumaithi said.
It also presents the talented ones to 43ft and 60ft races. Those who attained the distinguished levels in 22ft races during the past years are now among the elite sailors in larger races” he said.
