Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, on Wednesday directed the Dubai Municipality to mobilise support for the UAE Food Bank, an initiative he launched yesterday as part of the Year of Giving initiative on the occasion of the 11th anniversary of his accession as the Ruler of Dubai.
Food meals offered to the needy should be safe, well-packaged and well-presented so as to reflect the good image of the UAE as a humanitarian hub, he stressed.
HH Sheikh Mohammed also appointed Hussein Nasser Lootah, Director-General of Dubai Municipality as Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of the UAE Food Bank.
Dubai Municipality launched a food donation initiative that seeks to regulate the process of collection, processing and distribution of the excess food from the banquets and large events held in hotels, weddings, farm houses, restaurants, homes, etc., in order to be distributed to the needy families and individuals, in collaboration with charity organisations and hotels whose operations related to food are approved and supervised by the Food Safety Department of the Dubai Municipality, Lootah stated.
The initiative of the UAE Food Bank is a source of pride for the people as this humanitarian system will work on the optimal utilisation of food in application of social solidarity, and take advantage of the surplus food in a correct, healthy and organised way, Lootah added.
