Right as UK Prime Minister Theresa May filed for divorce from the European Union, her Brexit department hired elite management consultancy, McKinsey & Co., to the tune of 1.9 million pounds ($2.5 million) to help get the job done.
While the contract was only formally announced in an email, an accompanying excel sheet shows that the consultancy giant was hired on April 24, less than a month after May invoked Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty that set the country on course for two years of negotiations to leave the bloc.
Dexeu—as the government department is known, has struggled to hire and retain talent while dealing with an exodus of staff. The six-month contract ends on October 23.
Duff McDonald, author of “The Firm: The Story of McKinsey and its Secret Influence on American Business,” described to Forbes what kind of person works at the firm:
“You could tell a McKinsey man from a mile away: he was the good looking guy who belonged to the right club. The type who had not only gone to the right schools, but had been the student council president, or captain of the football team. A consultant at a rival firm even suspected they used to hire taller people.”
Repeated calls to McKinsey’s offices in London were not immediately returned.
