The Sharjah-based non-profit children’s organisation, the Kalimat Foundation for Children’s Empowerment (KFCE) participated in the “Bridging Worlds: Reaching Out to Young Refugees with Books and Stories” conference at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, in support of the global movement to empower children with humanitarian and cultural aid in areas affected by conflict, natural disasters and other difficult conditions.
Through its presence at the conference, KFCE explored various mechanisms that can be used to strengthen support for refugee children and their current mission to ensure the basic rights of every child to read and access books through the provision of libraries and other sources of knowledge.
The conference highlighted the role of books in nurturing children and young adults, developing their creativity and mental faculties, partially relieving their suffering, and giving them hope for a better future. It also showcased the experiences of a group of publishers and specialists who provided psychological support for children and youngsters, to alleviate their distress.
“We seek to bring about a qualitative shift in the lives of children who are affected by harsh conditions in their native countries, by providing them with books and ensuring that they have access to education and knowledge. Our mission is to empower them to the extent that they are able to break out of the shackles of misery, and to envision a world free from wars and disasters,” said Amna Al Mazmi, Manager of KFCE.
