DUBAI / WAM
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), organised an awareness programme during the Holy Month of Ramadan to promote the importance of using electricity and water sensibly and avoiding waste, as well as highlighting steps that can be taken to reduce consumption.
The programme, that the authority Dewa provides on its website and smart app, supports Dewa’s strategy to spread sustainability and encourage society to rationalise its use of electricity and water.
Over 23,500 people took part in 30 activities throughout the Holy Month. These included awareness lectures and interactive competitions in several locations across Dubai, including mosques, Iftar tents, Dubai Airport, Holy Qur’an memorisation centres, Ramadan majlises, centres for New Muslims, Zukher Clubs, centres for People of Determination, senior citizens’ centres, and shopping centres. Dewa’s Conservation Team also participated in the 23rd Dubai International Holy Qur’an Award, where Dewa is participating as the Diamond Sponsor, and sponsoring the 8th
Ramadan Aman campaign.
Dewa’s conservation programmes and initiatives throughout the year achieve significant savings in electricity and water use within various stakeholder groups. Cumulative savings between 2009 and 2018 reached 2 terrawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity and 7.4 billion gallons of water, equivalent to AED1.2 billion. These savings contributed to reducing one million tonnes of carbon emissions.
“Organising this awareness programme during the Holy Month of Ramadan supports Dewa’s strategy to consolidate the foundations of environmental sustainability and support the sustainable development of Dubai by rationalising the use of electricity, water, and natural resources to ensure their sustainability for generations to come. It also encourages society to adopt a sustainable lifestyle in electricity and water use.â€
This achieves the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to make Dubai the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world; the Carbon Abatement Strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021; and the Demand Side Management Strategy to reduce energy and water use by 30% by 2030,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dewa.
“All Dewa’s initiatives and programmes aim to promote the rational use of resources to become a community culture and daily practice. This is done within an integrated strategy to engage all members of society in the efforts to protect the environment and preserve natural resources. Dewa launches several environmental programmes and initiatives and awareness campaigns that achieved significant savings over the past years, and proved that everyone can take part in energy and water conservation efforts,” said Khawla Al Mehairi, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Government Communications at Dewa.
