Ahmed bin Hamdan crowns UAE rowing champions in Abu Dhabi

The President of the Emirates Sailing and Modern Rowing Federation Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan crowned the winners of the third round of the UAE Modern Rowing Championship, which was organised by Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club on Abu Dhabi breakwater. A total 92 medals were won by the participants in various categories.
Al-Hamriya Club, which came first, secured 128 points in 16 categories, ahead of the second-placed Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Academy with 52 points. Al-Hamriya achieved 28 podiums out of 48 honours.
In youth singles category, the first place went to Axel Rudy from Abu Dhabi Academy; in junior doubles category Mawaddah and Hamad Mohammad from Al-Hamriya Club won the first place; in men’s singles category, Hamad Al Matroushi from Al-Hamriya Club managed to achieve first place and in quadruple category mixed, the first place was attained by Al-Hamriya team led by Hamad Al-Matroushi, Saeed Jamal, Sarah Al-Ajnaf and Shadra Mohammad. In men’s singles category under 23 years old, Ammar Al-Balushi from Al-Hamriya Club won the first place; in youth doubles category, the first place went to Khamis Al-Nuaimi and Mohammad Ali; in junior women’s singles category Mawaddah Muhammad from Al Hamriya won the first place and in men’s doubles category, Hamad Al Matroushi and Ahmed Khamis finished first. In junior singles category under 16 years old, the first place went to Zayed Obaid Al Shamsi from Al-Hamriya Club; in women’s quadruple category, Abu Dhabi Academy team won first place led by Oud Al Dhaheri, Lydia, Wafaa Al Kathiri and Josu, and in women’s singles, Sarah Al-Agnaf from Al Hamriya Club won the first position.
In men’s doubles under 23 years old, Ammar Al Balushi and Zayed Al Shamsi came in the first place; in the mixed doubles category, Ibrahim Maraghi and Duxo won the first place from Abu Dhabi team and in women’s doubles category, Sarah Al Ajnaf and Shadra Muhammad came in first place. In men’s quad category, Al-Hamriyah Club achieved first place led by Ahmed Khamis, Mubarak Al-Yassi, Hamad Al-Matroushi and Ghanem Al-Shamsi.
The tournament witnessed the participation of the Kuwait’s modern rowing team, which competed in more than one category in a distinguished presence that is important for the preparations of Olympics.
The ceremony to crown the winners was attended by Salem Al-Rumaithi, General Manager Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, Mohammad Al-Obaidli, Secretary-General of the Emirates Sailing and Modern Rowing Federation, and Khalifa Al-Suwaidi, President of Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Academy.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan thanked Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club for organising the tour and presenting it successfully in all respects. He stressed that Abu Dhabi’s organising the competition always contributes to the enrichment and promotion of marine sports.
He further said that the competition was held in an ideal and more than wonderful atmosphere, especially with the large gathering of various marine schools and clubs in the competition. “The presence and participation of the various clubs contributed to a stronger and greater competition” he said.
He stressed the importance of this championship and similar programs in honing the skills of competitors and preparing for Olympic participation as modern rowing is one of the important sports on the Olympics’ map, to which the federation attaches great importance in terms of developing and upgrading the skills of the competitors.
He also thanked the Kuwaiti team for their appearance in more than one category as the championship was an important platform for enhancing and refining the skills through competing with various Emirati clubs.
The competitions will continue until May, with two modern rowing rounds remaining of this season.
