Malaysian PM Ismail Sabri Yaakob said he would not delay the dissolution of parliament, amid continued pressure from his party to hold a general election as soon as possible.
“To face the 15th general election, Barisan Nasional must be prepared,” Ismail said, referring to the ruling coalition. “I say that once we are prepared, I won’t delay for even a second to dissolve parliament,” he added in his speech at the BN annual convention in Kuala Lumpur.
The prime minister said he would consult with his allies in the BN on the date, as well as the top leaders in his party,
the United Malays National Organization.
Still, UMNO’s party president made it clear that an election should happen immediately. “Do it as soon as possible,” said Zahid Hamidi in his speech at the same convention, to cheers from the party members present. “PM, we are ready to face the 15th general election.”
